Betances Consumes

Energy Audit

Electricity: 123 kWh* per month

Water: 911.5 gallons per week (3,646 gallons per month)

Natural Gas: I don’t know how to determine this, as I live in an apartment building with no access to the hot water heater or the building’s heating system.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the consumption were high, though; this building is old as hell and everything breaks all the time.

Heating Oil: Apparently, none.

Vehicles (Gasoline): 0 gallons/0 CO2 output

Rail Travel: 9 miles usually traveled per week, which equals 3.15 CO2 per week or 12.6 CO2 per month, at the bare minimum.

Bus Travel: Buses are the absolute worst, and I avoid them at all costs. 0 miles traveled/0 CO2 output.

*(Number representative of November 2011.  Instead of trying to figure out the sheet, I went onto the NSTAR website and logged in to see my energy consumption.  It’s a great account of the total energy usage in my apartment, although I live with my mom and, therefore, am not responsible for the entirety of this number.)

Notes

Day 7: Spread the Word Saturday

1.  Consumption -

Water – teeth brushing, toilet flushes, hand-washing, 15 minute shower, water I’ve had to drink.

Food – Breakfast: ham, egg, cheese sandwich on bread, with orange juice. Random: Frosted Flakes (the best part: end of the bag with all the sugar at the bottom) mixed with some Special K, milk.  Dinner: Rice, beans, chicken, fried plantain, raspberry lemonade. Random: one Kit-Kat stick.

Electricity – I didn’t turn on any lights until it got dark and there was no more daylight.  I’ve been on the laptop for most of the day, doing everything from homework and projects, to social networking, to streaming the radio.  I’ve used my phone, but I haven’t charged it since I unplugged it around 9:30 this morning.  I actually used my iPod today, but I haven’t charged it in the longest time because I don’t use it frequently.

Gasoline – None, as I take the T.

$$Money$$ -  No money spent, since hypebeasts raided H&M (Versace).

2. Reduction – I’ve been on my laptop for most of the day, but I haven’t been consuming much electricity otherwise.  I haven’t spent any money which, though usually the case, has been rare this week.

3.  Sustainability – I’ve said the same thing about maintaining lower electricity usage and water consumption.  I don’t know what else to say, so I’ll go with that since it’s what has been working for me on a day-to-day basis.

4.  Following – Many people are proud for having stuck with this project and significantly reduced their consumption habits.  Even if only by a few marginal changes, every little bit helps.
